Packing yourself can be a worthwhile way to save money on your
upcoming move. We'll try to go over a few tips that may help make your
packing experience a more pleasurable one.
- Packing takes time. Don't wait until the last minute to start.
Instead start with out of the way areas, such as a basement or a
garage.
- Have lots of tape, padding material, and of course, boxes, on hand
to get the job started. Padding material can be newspaper
(unprinted will give cleaner results in the end), bubble wrap,
towels, blankets, stuffed animals, clothing, pillows.
- It is best to pack room by room so the contents don't become
intermixed. This also allows for convenient breaks or stopping
points.
- Make sure to mark the contents of the box, the desired room
placement, and your last name. An abbreviated comment or two should
suffice "LR / Towels & Linens / Smith".
- Pack dishes on their edge and wrap multiple same size plates
together, with paper in between.
- Start off the box with the heaviest item going into it, then pack
around it.
- Mirrors, pictures, glass shelves and glass table tops require
specialized flat cartons, generically called "mirror
cartons". It is important to ensure that the edges of
these items are properly protected and cushioned.
- Make sure not to pack any items that we cannot ship. These
include flammables, aerosol cans, paint and oil. Printable:
